The Butchart Gardens
Butchart Gardens is a world-renowned garden paradise, created by Jennie Butchart, the wife of Robert Pim Butchart, who himself was a prominent Canadian industrialist. Located in Brentwood Bay near Victoria, BC.
In the early 1900s, Robert Butchart developed a successful cement business in the area, which led to the excavation of a large limestone quarry on the family’s property. After the quarry was depleted, Jennie, who had a passion for gardening, transformed the abandoned site into a beautiful garden in the early 20th century. Her vision turned what was once a barren industrial landscape into the stunning Sunken Garden, the centerpiece of the gardens today.
Spanning over 55 acres and known for its year round blooms - Butchart gardens attracts visitors from around the world. Seasonal events include fireworks during the summertime and ‘the Christmas lightup’ in December.
The Butchart family continued to expand and develop the gardens, adding more themed areas over time. Today, the gardens remain a family-run business, maintained and enjoyed by the Butchart family’s descendants.
